Halloween was first celebrated by Celtic people. For them, it was a festival dedicated to the dead. It was the biggest and most important holiday of the Celtic year. During the festival, Celtic people would light bonfires for the dead and would even sacrifice animals.
The original name of the holiday was Samhain (pronounced Sah-ween). At some point throughout the evolution of Christianity across Europe, the purpose of Halloween was changed. It evolved from being an opportunity to celebrate the dead, to being the night during which evil spirits are thought to roam the earth.
Nowadays, children and even adults dress up like scary creatures (such as witches, zombies, mummies, skeletons, etc.) and go knocking on their neighbors’ doors saying “Trick or treat!”. Usually they receive candy or other sweet treats.
